A masculine response to Taylor Swift’s “gold rush”

A knight in shining armor, they call me
Handsome, his golden locks
Always falling so perfectly into place
I hear the whispers
I feel the flush
As they pass me by
The “chance” encounters
The smiling excuses
The giddy speeches

Darling can’t you see
This shining armor
Is but a prison
This golden halo casts
A heavy shadow
And even with all this light around me
I still can’t see clearly enough
To find myself

Do you remember us
Sitting there, by the water?
Let me take you back
To those ancient lakes
Where wound and healing meet
Where words and meaning matter

If you’ll come with me again
Linger, won’t you?
Beyond the rehearsed pleasantries
And the rosy flirtations
Get past them
And let’s talk about
Our wonders and our wanders
Promise me you’ll allow
Our souls to touch
And I promise you’ll see me
Truly see me

No, I am no gold rush
Unless you mean to say
That I am but a mineral
Buried and forgotten
And resurrected to the light
Only to pass through
Greedy and unforgiving hands
Promise you’ll look after me
And I’ll will my shimmer to fade
And like a shooting star
That has run its course
I’ll fall from the high heavens
Into your lap forever.
